Dr David Bolzonello

MBBS, FACSP

Dr Bolzonello is a Consultant Sport & Exercise Medicine Physician who has been part of the Alphington Sports Medicine team since 1991 and boasts over 30 years clinical experience. Dr Bolzonello has a special interest in groin/hip, knee, shoulder and spinal disorders, and adolescent health. He also has a strong interest in workplace injuries and assisting in the development of return-to-work programs for injured workers.

Dr Bolzonello has a strong background across many sports, including Australian Rules Football, Tennis, Soccer and Basketball. 

He started his Sports Medicine career at the Carlton Football Club in the early eighties. He’s also former Senior Club Doctor with the Melbourne Football Club and the Calder Cannons U-18 TAC Cup team (where he’s a life member) and has previously worked with the Western Bulldogs and Sydney Football Clubs.

With tennis, he was a Medical Officer, and subsequently Medical Director for the Australian Open (1988 – 2002). During the 2006 Commonwealth Games, he worked at the “Polyclinic” in the Athlete’s Village.

David was the Melbourne Boomers (WNBL) Team Doctor for the 2021/22 season joining long time club Physio, our own Dr Gaylene McKay, to assist the club in navigating the Covid-19 pandemic along with the usual athlete medical care. He was also the inaugural Club Doctor for the Western United Football Club managing both the Men’s and Women’s A-League Teams, as well as overseeing the Club’s Academy Program.

David is a Consultant to WorkSafe Victoria and its agents, working as a Medical Advisor assisting Claims Officers in their management of claims. He also provides independent advice to a range of self-insured employers.

Dr Bolzonello is a past President of the Victorian Branch of Sports Medicine Australia (SMA), a past Chair of Training of the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians (ACSEP), and Chair of the Overseas Trained Physicians (OTP) Assessment Committee.

He continues to supervise Registrars at the Clinic, and is an occasional editor for the Medical Journal of Australia and Australian Journal Of General Practice.

Memberships: Fellow of Australasian College of Sports Physicians, Fellow of Sports Medicine Australia, The Italian Medical Society.

Availability: Tuesdays, Thursdays (pm), Fridays (pm). Telehealth appointments available.
