Dr Samantha May

An experienced Consultant Sport & Exercise Physician, Dr Samantha May has a specific interest in tendinopathy, running-related injuries, osteoarthritis, female athlete health (RED-S), and concussion management.

She is the Head Doctor for the Australian Opals Basketball squad, the Melbourne Vixens Netball team at the Victorian Institute of Sport, and to the AFL Umpires. She has previously worked as Doctor for the Australian Diamonds Netball Team and Essendon Football Club.

Joining the Alphington Sports Medicine team in 2020, Samantha has extensive experience working in elite sports including AFL/AFLW, netball, basketball, cricket, athletics (track and field), gymnastics, hockey, sailing, rowing and tennis.

Samantha completed her specialist training under the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Medicine in 2024, and she recently completed her Master of Applied Science (Research) through La Trobe University on the topic “Ultrasound Measurement of Gastrocnemius Muscle Architecture in Athletes”.

Samantha completed her Bachelor of Medicine, Surgery and Advanced Medical Science at The University of Melbourne in 2013. She completed a Diploma of Sports Medicine through the International Olympic Committee in 2016, as well as a Postgraduate Certificate in Clinical Management of Pain by online distance learning through The University of Edinburgh in 2015.

As part of the clinical services in this practice, Samantha is trained to make an accurate diagnosis, and importantly, identify the underlying causes or contributing risk factors to minimise recurrence. She can arrange appropriate investigations from blood tests to ECGs, and x-rays to complex imaging, including rebateable MRI scans. She is also experienced in ultrasound-guided procedures, including corticosteroid and hyaluronic acid injections, with treatment tailored to the individual’s needs and goals. Where allied health or other specialist input is required, she can facilitate timely referral to appropriate practitioners.

Availability: Wednesday (am) at Sunbury Physiotherapy. Thursday (pm) at Alphington Sports Medicine in Northcote. Telehealth appointments available.

Note: A current referral from a general or specialist medical practitioner is required for appointments with our Consultant Sport & Exercise Physicians.
