Dr Tess King is a Sport and Exercise Medicine Physician Registrar and Specialist GP with a strong background in elite sport and female athlete health. She is currently undertaking specialist training with the Australasian College of Sport and Exercise Physicians and has been practising medicine for over 13 years.
Tess has extensive experience working across elite and international sporting environments. She is currently Head Doctor for the Melbourne Football Club’s AFLW team and previously held the role of Head Doctor for Melbourne Victory’s A-League Women. She has worked as a Team Doctor for the Australian Olympic Team at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and is the Reserve Medical Officer for the Milano Cortina 2026 Winter Olympic Games. She has also worked at the Australian Open since 2021 and has provided medical care across remote endurance events, gymnastics, CrossFit, and other major sporting competitions.
Tess is interested in all aspects of musculoskeletal medicine, with a particular focus on dance, gymnastics, snow sports, CrossFit/Hyrox, running, weightlifting, and all football codes (AFL, soccer, rugby). She enjoys working with paediatric and adolescent athletes, as well as masters athletes, including considerations around perimenopause.
Tess also has extensive experience in female athlete health, load management, nutrition and fuelling, and the intersection of physical and mental health in sport. She previously worked as a Specialist Women’s Health GP with Jean Hailes for Women’s Health, contributing to national education initiatives, professional webinars, and expert media commentary across print, radio, and television. She has delivered female athlete health education internationally at the ICC T20 Women’s World Cup and more recently for Cricket Australia. She is also an Adjunct Research Officer with the La Trobe Sport and Exercise Medicine Research Centre, currently involved in qualitative research in tendinopathy.
She is a Fellow of the Royal Australian College of General Practitioners and has additional training in Emergency Medicine. She continues to work in urgent care and emergency departments and is confident in managing acute injuries, concussion, trauma, and complex medical presentations.
Tess has a background as a gymnast and dancer, and when she’s not working, she can be found training or competing in a CrossFit gym or hitting the slopes with her partner and teenage daughters.
