Dr Gaylene McKay

APA Titled Sports & Exercise Physiotherapists

Gaylene has been at Alphington Sports Medicine since 1990 and is both the Managing Director of the Clinic and an APA titled Sports Physiotherapist. Gaylene completed a PhD degree, where she investigated injuries in basketball with a focus on recurrent ankle sprains. Ankle injuries are one of the areas of her special interest. She has also lectured to Physiotherapists about the management of ankle injuries for many years.

Gaylene has extensive experience as a Sports Physiotherapist, across various sports. She is currently the Physiotherapist for Australian Boomerangs (men’s basketball team with intellectual impairment) and was the Physiotherapist to Tall Blacks (New Zealand Men’s Basketball Team) in 2024. She was also the lead Physiotherapist for the Melbourne (nee Bulleen) Boomers in the Women’s National Basketball League (1990 to 2024) and the Australian Women’s “Opals” Basketball team (2015 to 2021), with whom she travelled to the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics. Her interest in basketball extends from her own participation in the sport – she played 348 games and won 6 championships over 17 years in the Women’s National Basketball League.

With a personal understanding of Calisthenics from her own participation in her younger years, Gaylene has been liaising with Calisthenics Victoria (since 2013), striving to deliver injury prevention strategies to the sport. She has also previously worked in netball, at the Commonwealth Games (2006) and with the Victorian Netball team (1993 to 2001).

Gaylene is a Physiotherapy Advisor to the WorkSafe (Victoria) & Transport Accident Commission (TAC) Clinical Panels, these role sees her discuss treatments and mentor many other Physiotherapists.

Memberships: Australian Physiotherapy Association including Sports and Exercise Physiotherapy group
