Exercise Physiologist Shane O’Leary presenting at the Australian and New Zealand Stroke Organisation Conference

Shane O’Leary, one of our Exercise Physiologists, recently presented at the 2026 Australian and New Zealand Stroke Organisation (ANZSOC) Conference.

His presentation showcased an Exercise Physiology-led Secondary Stroke Prevention Program, developed within Austin Health’s Community Rehabilitation Service. What began as identifying a gap in post-stroke care has since evolved into a routine clinical service supporting stroke survivors through exercise, education, and health coaching.

The program aims to help participants improve physical activity, manage lifestyle-related risk factors, and build confidence in self-management following stroke. Evaluation findings demonstrated that the program was safe, highly acceptable to participants, and associated with improvements in physical activity and functional outcomes.

Presenting at ANZSOC provided an opportunity to share how Exercise Physiology can contribute to secondary stroke prevention and support the translation of evidence into practical, scalable rehabilitation services. The work highlights the important role of allied health in improving long-term outcomes for people living with stroke.

Shane is proud to have contributed to this innovative model of care and grateful for the support of the multidisciplinary team and participants who made the program possible.
